Governor Newsom Signs Phone-Free School Act Requiring LEAs to Limit Cell Phone Use by 2026

Breaking news!

On September 23, 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Phone-Free School Act

On September 23, 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Phone-Free School Act which requires all California public school districts, charter schools, and county offices of education (COEs) to adopt policies restricting cell phone use in schools by July 1, 2026. While many public educational agencies in California already have policies limiting cell phone use in schools, now all California public school districts, charter schools and COEs will be required to adopt a policy restricting cell phone use. To what extent cell phone use is restricted will be left up to the individual LEA in the development of its policy consistent with the Phone-Free School Act.
